My Skincare Routine

This post is a little different to what I've done before, but after seeing some of the people I follow share their skincare secrets and swear-by-its, I thought now would be a better time than any other to throw my two cents into the ring!

Before I was 16 I was blessed with smooth, blemish-free skin, and so skincare was never a priority to me. As I started college, however, I developed pretty bad acne and had no real sense of how to get rid of it. I've gone from using the most basic, drugstore 'anti-spot' facial washes to having a researched and refined every day skincare routine that I can safely say I swear by.

Obviously I'd just like to point out that, as you probably know, everyone's skin is different. Just because a product has worked for me doesn't guarantee anyone else results, so just consider this as a guideline!

My one piece of advice would be to persevere with any product. For example, when I started using The Body Shop's Seaweed range, it broke me out after the first couple of uses, but once my skin acclimatised to it, I started to notice the benefits. Obviously if you're having adverse reactions to a product it's probably not for you (and you should potentially seek medical help), but otherwise don't give up after not noticing any differences after the first few uses.

A few things I'd like to mention:
- I have oily, blemish-prone skin, so if you have normal, dry or combination skin, some of these products won't be that compatible with you.
- I developed this skincare routine once the bulk of my acne had calmed down.
- I use this routine primarily to make sure that I'm treating my skin properly but also to deal with any breakouts that I get and to reduce the appearance of pre-existing scarring, blemishes and uneven skin tone.
LUSH Vanishing Cream Facial Moisturiser:
I swear by this moisturiser. I always will. I use this every morning on clean skin and in the evening after I've used a toner. This moisturiser is perfect for oily skin - a common misconception is that oily skin doesn't need moisturising as it will just make the skin feel 'greasy', when in fact it needs it just as much as any other skin type. Vanishing Cream does exactly what it says it will; it vanishes into the skin almost instantly leaving your face feeling soft and hydrated without a greasy residue. If you're looking to justify the price, I bought this tub four months ago and I'm only half way through it. So, yeah.

Next is what I consider my night time skincare routine. I use these products every night, without exception. ...Even when I'm drunk, which says a lot about how important they are and how oddly dedicated drunk me is to good skin.
Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser:
I'm typically not a fan of gender-specific cosmetics as at the end of the day, skin is skin. However, as I don't wear makeup, I figured that it would be redundant for me to use a cleanser with specialist makeup removing properties. Unless you live under a YouTube-shaped rock, you'll know that everyone and their dog can vouch that Liz Earle's Cleanse and Polish is a cracking product. It's gentle on the skin but still gets rid of all the nasty stuff that's built up over the day whilst the muslin cloth acts a gentle physical exfoliant. After using very stripping foaming cleansers I was converted to this product 9 months ago and I haven't looked back since.

Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant:
I know I'm a student and I know that I can't really afford to use this product but I DON'T CARE. It's wonderful. I've only been using it for a few weeks but the difference it's made is incredible; it's already started to even out my skin tone and reduce the appearance of my acne scarring and I can't wait to see the long term effects.
LUSH Tea Tree Water Toner:
I use this product after I've cleansed and exfoliated to help rebalance the pH of my skin and because I've always loved the effect that tea tree has on my blemishes.

The Body Shop Blemish Fade Night Lotion:
If there's one product in this whole post that I would say cleared up my skin, it would have to be this. I have sworn by this product for nearly 2 years and I don't see that changing anytime soon. My face reacts really well to tea tree and I found that this lotion helped to sooth and repair my skin almost immediately. It's somewhat of a best-seller and is quite frequently sold out but if you manage to track one down, I couldn't recommend it more.
(It should be noted that I use these products interchangeably and not always on a daily basis. When I do use them, it'll most likely be in the shower in the morning or if I have a bath after work.)

The Body Shop Tea Tree Cool and Creamy Wash:
I really like this facial wash when the temperature's a bit warmer; the consistency is lovely and smooth and does a brilliant job of cooling down my skin.
The Body Shop Seaweed Pore-Cleansing Facial Exfoliator:
I only use this after a long shift at work when I wish I could just peel off my skin and start afresh. It is, however, quite a strong physical exfoliant and so may not be suitable for sensitive skin. I would only use this no more than twice a week, if I was you.
The Body Shop Seaweed Deep Cleansing Facial Wash:
This is the one I find myself reaching for most often in the shower in the morning. It's a lovely mix of the two; the smooth consistency soothes the skin whilst it also leaves me feeling soft and clean.
LUSH Mask of Magnaminty Face and Body Mask:
After discovering this product last June I tend to find myself reaching for it once a week to revive my skin. It's a good physical exfoliant that leaves me looking radiant, if I do say so myself. I'm also a fan of the LUSH Cosmetic Warrior fresh face mask which is really good for spot-prone skin. (It does smell like the Domino's garlic and herb dip though, so just bear that in mind if the sound of that makes you gag.)

LUSH Prince Shaving Cream:
This is another relatively new addition to my skincare routine, but I'm already a fan. Who knew shaving could actually be a pleasant experience! This leaves my skin feeling incredibly soft and does a brilliant job of preventing irritation when I shave. Evidently Gillette isn't the best a man (or anyone else) can get.

And that's it! In case you can't tell, I'm incredibly passionate about skincare and I'm really happy to share my favourites with you. If you decide to give any of these products a go please let me know how you get on with them in the comments. Happy skincare-ing!
